Imperial Shih Tzu Facts You Should Know

If you do not like pure bred Shih Tzu, then maybe an Imperial Shih Tzu is just exactly the dog breed for you. If you are considering to get a smaller breed of dog with the cuteness and appearance of the Shih Tzu, you should take a look at the teacup or Imperial Shih Tzu. Here is some information you need to know if this is the right dog breed for you.

• They are small-sized Shih Tzu

This is the very small version of the Shih Tzu breed. Another name for it would be Teacup Shih Tzu. However, the names that we use to call it are not official names and the breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club and American Shih Tzu Club. However, breeders of this dog breed claim that this Shih Tzu breed is legitimate even though the clubs do not recognize it.

They weigh just 3 to 6 pounds

Even if they are fully grown, the Teacup Shih Tzu is still very light with a weight of 3-6 pounds.

• They are not recommended for homes with small children

With their small size, you may think that they would be perfect playmates for little children. No, they don’t. This is because the kids can easily injure these little puppies easily.

• Regular checkups with the vet is a must

Since their bodies are extremely small, the imperial Shih Tzu may be prone to different health problems. That is why it is recommended that you visit their veterinarian on a regular basis.

• They are sensitive to temperature

The small bodies of these dogs will have some problems adjusting to changes in temperature. That is why it is important for you to protect your dog from the cold by putting some clothes on him. And make sure that they are hydrated – proper hydration is essential for people and also for dogs.

Now that already know more information about this amazing dog breed, maybe you are already considering getting one. If you are, we assure you that you are going to make a good choice!

  1. i have three of these amazing little fur babies …they love everyone my german shepherd and two retrievers as well

  2. Not even a true breed, but a runt of a litter used to make con men more money, as they get older they have many problems. Get a true Shih Tzu. Stop accepting these poor bred pups.

  3. Linda Hagen-Mooney

They are just as loving and pretty as a regular shih tzu, just a little smaller. They are fine!

  4. Ruby is used to describe the smallest of the litter….can’t be a runt if they ALL are born to be within a 4-6 pound range consistently. I love my little girl, all 4 pounds of her. She is the size of my doberman’s head lol and has no health problems whatsoever

  5. Imperial Shihtzus were originally bred from a small size as this is what the Chinese Emperor wanted. She did not want big dogs, she wanted them small in size. So if you check the imperial Shihtzu history, they are infact the original Shihtzu.
