- Tire him out.
One of the common reasons why dogs bark at night is frustration or boredom. It is important that you make sure that your dog is getting enough physical and mental exercise during the daytime. When your dog is tired, he is less likely to bark at night. This is because he will not have enough energy to create noises as he will surely be sleep after all the walking and running that he has done the entire day. It is important to determine how much exercise your dog needs so you can provide him that.
- Remove the things that distract him.
Maybe you have installed new lights in your backyard? Maybe you have placed a new lamp in front of his dog house. Or maybe you have installed new sprinklers. At times, dogs bark because they are threatened by an unfamiliar object in their surroundings. Try to remove any newly installed items in your backyard and see if your dog will stop barking.
- Minimize dog separation anxiety.
Excessive barking is a result of your dog’s separation anxiety. If this is the case with your dog, you are lucky since there are many ways on how you can minimize dog anxiety. If it is possible, you can invite your dog to sleep in your bedroom. But if this is not an option, you can choose to just simply leave a piece of clothing (with your perfume) in his sleeping corner. In this way, your dog will feel as if you are just by his side even if you are not.
- Place him in a crate.
Another reason why dogs bark is because they do not feel secure. This is most common with puppies and new dogs. If you wish to address this problem, the best thing that you can do is to place them in a crate. When you give them a crate, they will see it as their territory. They will feel that they have a small corner in your home. To make them feel more secure, you can cover the crate.
Excessive barking is one of the most common behavioral problems in dogs. Before you lose hope, you must keep in mind that there are plenty of ways on how you can stop excessive barking. The tips mentioned above are just some of the things that you can do to stop their barking.
I did my best to avoid the dreaded crate but in the end we had to cave in and let him sleep in a crate, he just wouldn’t stop barking. Now he got so used to it that after his dinner he comes in our bedroom for a longer play session and then he goes in the crate by himself. I also use the crate during the day when I leave him alone so I don’t have to upset my neighbors with his barking.
