Bringing home a new puppy is always a great moment. For sure, you will be excited to introduce your new Shih Tzu to your older dogs. You may have already imagined how they would react. You might have imagined them jumping up and down with delight with the new addition in their pack. Sadly, not all dogs will reach that same way when bringing home a new puppy. If you wish to make sure that everything will go out smoothly one the first day of bringing your puppy home, here are some things that you should do:
- Opt to introduce them in a dog park:
It is best that you let your new puppy and old puppy meet in a park or a garden and not in your home (so that your old dog will not feel territorial). In an open area, there will be lots of distractions and your old dogs will not focus on the fact that there is a foreign dog in front of them.
- Keep them on a leash:
This is important. Having them on a leash will make it easier for you to break up any fight that might ensue. Let them meet and see each other in a natural way. Just simply allow them to greet and sniff each other.
- Just relax:
Keep in mind that dogs can easily sense any tense feelings that you may have. That is why you should relax a little. Just simply let them be and allow them to get to know each other better without forcing them together.
The first meeting of a new pup with the older dogs can be an amazing moment but it can also be a traumatic one. You are the one responsible for making sure that it will be the former. If you will follow these tips, you can successfully welcome your new puppy home.
